Just flushed my ativan

It was prescribed a couple months ago when I started on an antidepressant to help with start up anxiety. I tried to take it as prescribed, really. I even cut the tablets into quarters for mild anxiety, would take a half if I felt a panic attack coming. But later, I found myself intentionally downing energy drinks so that I could take a whole one. Or I'd take one just because it was better than feeling sober. There are times that I know having it helped, and I may need it at times, but I know myself and I know having it on hand is just too risky. It was my hangover security blanket. It was only prescribed for a temporary as needed basis anyway. I think I'm better off without it. I know it was the right thing to do because as I looked at the pills in the toilet a part of me wanted to dive in after them!! Anyway. I just needed to share this. Here's to TOTAL sobriety. 3 days and counting.

Well done Erin on day 3 i dont know what that medication was but i think you should tell your doctor as stopping meds abruptly can be dangerous

If it was prescribed a couple of months ago then more than likely you are not dependent upon it. If you have been taking it for several months and in a high dose, then you really need to be careful. It is a benzo and if you are dependent upon them then lowering your dosage in a set timeframe is a better alternative. Not a doctor, but have years of experience with benzos. Good luck.

I'm glad you realized that the Ativan was causing you problems.

Hopefully you can find healthy ways to deal with anxiety.

Grats on a sober 3 days.

Im on day 1 again and also have terrible anxiety with panic attacks. Its the worst thing about the first week imo. Generalized dread with periods of heart palpations and thinking im dying.

I often wonder how i ended up in this sad state where i dont even want to leave the house. When i get to 30 sober, i usually improve but become frustrated i dont enjoy life more and relapse.... meh.

Its lorazepam. I was not dependent on it. I was cautious about not taking it everyday or at a high dosage. I just know that it was a gateway to drinking for me. He did not refill my prescription last time I saw him.

Super proud of you! And I know how hard that was, no easy task for sure!
Thank you for posting about this. I know I use my painkillers/anxiety meds in ways not prescribed. I took a pain pill this morning for my hangover, I guess that means I can't count today as day one? I don't know all the technicalities, but I do know the courage it took for you to flush the pills. I'm here cheering for you as you step into a whole new dimension of sobriety.

Funny thing is...when I was drinking I took ativan, mainly at night to help sleep but sometimes during the day also. Since I stopped, I don't take it at all anymore. We think we drink because of anxiety, but for me, drinking caused the anxiety. Good for you for dumping it, erin.. It is easy to become dependant on ativan.

Don't look back! You may still have bouts of anxiety - we all did in the early days.

Good for you. Grab life by the horns. Anxiety is tough but benzo addiction can be hell too.
