You may not recall, but I do, the night I held a handful of pills and a bottle of vodka and thought for a long time. I thought about you. Mine wasn’t a heart broken by abandonment. I did not mourn for a lost love, no. I tended a broken heart because I believed our love would never die.

For I had been unfaithful to you. I had gone with others and loved them passionately. But your forgiveness has no bounds. You have taken me back countless times. You have consoled me when I was betrayed by others and sheltered me from the heat of rage. You require no confession, no apology, no promise.

But your love suffocates. It blinds. It stunts and simplifies. Within it, I do not grow. I am only challenged to survive.

The others hold me to a higher standard. They demand more of me than a broken heart and an open mouth. They insist that I maintain my humanity. They require that I am faithful, and they question my commitment. For them I must work hard and build the strength you discourage. To be with them, I must first be alone. They are difficult, complicated, and painful. They are the ones who break my heart.

And I love them more than I love you.
