My drinking was fueled by lies and sustained by it. I lied to myself and those all around me about it.

For me sobriety is more about honesty than anything...especially to yourself.

Only when making excuses for myself. Otherwise, can't remember just flat out making things up.

Definitely felt the guilt for other reasons, though. It's pretty tough to move past, takes some effort but it can be done!

only when my wife asked me if I was drinking. It depends on what your definition of drinking is. Having a six pack of beer wasn't drinking to me.

The worst lie I told to myself. That I wasn't an alcoholic. I believed that lie for years.

yep! I came up with the CRAZIEST stuff. I repeated it to other people is the worst part. Some things that came to me in my drunken state are just devastating. Its another one of those things that take time to heal.

Your post leads me to appreciate (yet again) the value of doing the 12 steps.

All the best to you.

Yup.

Lied about a lot of things, over the years, mostly to get myself out of trouble of some sort or to deny I remembered things. It's the first thing I am working on, because honesty is key to sobriety, as others have said.

Yeah I lied about anything and everything, often for no reason.

I think the low self esteem I had made me seek the attention drunk that I'd never seek sober?

I lied a lot to myself. Mostly about quitting alcohol. Oh I"'ll quit in 2011, or 2012, or 2013. All lies. Also telling myself lies about getting in shape or eating healthy. Another way to put it is: not keeping my word. Telling myself and others that I'll do something and not following through is what I am tired of. Talking the talk but not walking the walk. Ya know what I'm getting at?
