Medical Leave from Work
I took a month off - twice, eight years apart, with the same employer. The first time I did out patient treatment but I hadn't yet fully admitted I was an alcoholic and continued drinking. The second time I went to in patient treatment and stayed sober for almost eleven months. Relapsed for three and now have a year sober.
I recommend it but if you do it, make it count. Have a plan ready in advance for how you will fill that time to get and say sober. Programs, literature, support, AA meetings or any group you plan to use. Don't let it be license to drink because you don't have to worry about calling in sick. I did that once at one point but not the two treatment times.
Mine was a combination of sick and vacation time but I think the last time I had some leave as well. Check with your employer or human resources to find what is available. When I took the time off the second time I had called my boss the day before I entered detox and it was arranged in a day. I was sort of under the microscope when I first returned but no longer so any initial uneasiness passed.
Go for it if you can. A month is a really good start.
