Advice to newcomers
Advice to newcomers
Hello, there seems to be a lot of newcomers today, I guess that is not to be such a surprise after the holiday. I am also a newcomer (been here for two weeks) but have spend a lot of hours reading the site. Maybe a thread stating smile advice would be useful to help orientate those that are new. Here is the advice I received that was particularly useful:
1) stop drinking immediately, there is not better time than now to stop
2) read the newcomer stickies on the site
3) if you have been drinking very heavily or daily then see a doctor as soon as possible and stopping cold can be dangerous
4) research AVRT
5) research AA and attend a meeting if possible
6) make a firm commitment to never drink again and write a recovery plan that includes identifying your triggers to drink and how you will over come them
7) consider informing a trusted friend and/or partner, nobody else needs to know unless you choose to tell them
8) over 90% of people on this site believe that moderating their drinking would not work and that stopping completely was necessary. It is unlikely that moderation would work for you
9)log on to SR and read and research as much and as frequently as you can. Tool up and educate yourself as much as possible
10) keep a positive attitude and be absolute in your determination to stay dry
anyone have any others?

I would add, go on youtube and watch documentaries about liver disease and alcoholism.
Particularly these :

Also read books, including the Big Book, for stories of recovery.

24). You deserve to be sober. Remember when you used to tell yourself that you deserved a drink after everything the day brought? Well, it turns out that was a fib. A great big fat fib.
You deserve a life without all of the misery that alcohol brings with it, without the shame and guilt, and sadness and depression and anxiety and nausea and malnutrition and amnesia and bloating and cirrhosis and neuropathy and divorce and unemployment and loss of self-respect.
You deserve a life of dignity, of achievement, of self-respect, of peace and joy and health, and a little happiness too. You deserve to be sober.
You deserve to be free.

And an occasional sunrise to reflect on waking clearheaded and the fact that you and the universe have orchestrated it such that we have the unending possibility to be as good as we are and perhaps a little better, everyday.
