Help me

I know I have a drink problem. I hate that I have a drink problem, I'm scared to stop as I'm told stopping is dangerous. I can't go to my GP, I just can't!
With some support I am determined to quit.
I drink around 20 to 40 units per day, but last week I managed to go a full three days of just 8-10 units!
Sadly, I couldn't manage a whole day with zero units.
I desperately want to stop drinking and the thought of being drink free REALLY excites me! Just need some help, please.

Welcome! Actually, "functioning" is a stage of alcoholism, not a type of alcoholic. If we keep drinking we will eventually lose the ability to function.

Why can't you see a doctor for help in getting thru withdrawal? Detox can be dangerous so medical help is advised.

It's hard at first, getting used to living sober, but the rewards are worth the effort it takes to stay sober. I hope our support can help you get sober for good.

One thing that I really needed when I started day one, no beer, was to have someone around me. Anyone. Visit a friend, family member. Be around people in a coffee shop and have a nice hot chocolate if caffeine ain't happening.

Being by myself always made me a tad too squirrely when trying to recover.

Happy trails!

Glad to meet you Pooki - you're in the right place for encouragement and support. We all understand. You're right - it feels amazing to be free - and you can get there.

Hi pooki - drinking 20-40 untis a day is a lot. I don;t know what your reasons are and I don't need to know, but it really would be in your best interests to see a Dr.

Detox can sometimes be dangerous and there's no way of any of us knowing what you might be in for.

You really need a professional opinion.

Is a unit like a shot or a jigger? It sound like a lot anyway. Don't label yourself as functioning alcoholic because it allows you to "justify" your level of consumption. You don't want to wait until you are an "dysfunctional alcholic"

Maybe functional in the physical aspect but prolly not too functional on the mental thing.
Glad ya WANT to quit. That's a big part there.
Add willingness to do whatever it takes, too.

And it only has to be done one day at a time and if necessary one minute at a time.

Prayers out for ya!

I'm glad you posted and that you want to stop drinking and change your life.

I also hope that you will talk to your dr about your plan to detox.

Why is it you can't go to see your GP? Doctors are there to help with stuff like this.

And just to clarify: stopping drinking isn't necessarily dangerous. Stopping drinking on your own, without the supervision of a doctor, can be very dangerous. That's why you really must go see a doctor and get help. That's the only way safe to do this.
