Gastric Bypass

Hi.

Just curious: Did anyone else in here start having drinking problems after Gastric Bypass surgery..?

I am five years out and it's like going from one addiction to another. When I was drinking, it's like the it took the place of food. It's sad, but it is true.

It's quite common from what I understand.

This is a fantastic book:

Thank you, Opivotal. This surgery is fairly new in Norway, but I know research has been done in the US.

I guess the addictive personality thing plays a role here. For me it's been food, then turning to shopping, then sex. Cherry on top: Alcohol.

Good to see some other people having the same issues though. I find it difficult not to let one addiction replace another, but just like with a regular break-up I think it's important to stay busy for a while until the dust settles.

...not throwing myself into a new relationship - or inviting someone from the past over.

Absolutely

I think it comes from the different way we process sugar after surgery, and let's face it, alcohol turns to sugar once we ingest it.

It only takes 2 for me to get drunk, and even then 2 was never enough.

I think also it was because I couldn't eat as much, but liquids were never a problem after surgery.

Yes, Yes! If I knew what I knew now I would have tried harder to loose weight with out bypass! I never been arrested for driving while fat! Fat never caused me the problems that alcoholism has. There is actually new research b4 it was thought that we were only transferring addictions. They now r finding out the biggest change and cause of the alcoholism is the way our new digestive system processes alcohol. This does not happen with people who have the lap band or vertical sleeve. Its the surgeries that involve resectioning of the small intestine. I personally have been researching cause i was not warned of this issue. Im about 14 years out. It only gets worst.
