Popeye... Drinking cost me a lot. nearly everything on your list and some other things I hold dear.

But I look at things along these lines... I cannot say with any certainty that, had I chose another path that loss would not be part of it as well. I don't think its avoidable no matter what road we choose... they will all lead to some type of loss.

One thing in common with all loss is how we rebuild. From drinking... from poor choices... bad financial decisions... all the same in the end.

Getting sober... and more importantly staying sober has given me a rebirth that had I not lost so much I would never have discovered.

Granted loss is not required to learn but since it happened I choose to take the time now to learn.

I hope you are sober today. And all my best to you!

Ken

Friends

The respect of my colleagues and bosses, and thus soon potentially my job; four to five years of focused, actual professional development rather than just getting through each day

Four to five years of my life, and the personal development that could have been

My relationships with my mother, father and sister, which I have basically let fall into non-existence

My relationship with my boyfriend, which I'm not sure how it might have gone if I'd been sober, but it's basically dying now

Pretty much all my non-drinking hobbies fell by the wayside at some point

Four to five years I could have been writing

My skin being unscarred, because I self harm more when my inhibitions are lowered from drinking

Self respect

Edited to add: A decent credit score lol

All of the above!. I lost pretty much everything. Lost the girl before marriage was in the cards. Bankrupted myself, lost my career, evicted from Condo. Madness....

People's trust. My confidence and peace of mind. When you step back and look at it, it's pretty weird how we get drunk against our will.

I lost the only thing that matters...time. Precious irreplaceable time. Thirty years of time that could have been used playing with my children, taking walks with my wife, visiting those I love that are gone now. We have a finite amount of time while here and I squandered decades. All the memories that I could have and I chose to sit drunk in front of a TV set watching shows I don't remember.

It cost me my self respect and the respect of my kids. But now that I've been sober for a while, it's come back.
