I am a new member. I had a revelation of sorts when the police came to my home 2 nights ago. I went to my first AA meeting yesterday and again today. I am having withdrawals worse today than yesterday. When does it get better? Thanks for listening.

2nd sober day!

I found the first four or five days were the worst. After the first week it started to get better. Hang on. The bad feelings will pass. Living sober is the way to go.

Hey, I'm on Day 2 also and I am exhausted! I honestly don't feel any better than if i had gotten hammered last night.

Good luck. I'm excited for all this "feeling amazing" I hear so much about here.

One day at a time it gets better - for me it took a couple weeks to feel like I was part of the world again. I went to meetings every day for the first three months. They helped a lot.

Welcome to the Forum!!

Years of drinking isn't going to be healed in a matter of days, it's going to take time, but it will get better!!

Hang in there!!

The first few days can be very painful. But worth it. The inevitability of things improving is what I hung onto.

Keep hitting those AA meetings - your body will be free of the alcohol 72 hours from your last drink - from that point you will start feeling physically better. Be aware that the point where you start to feel better is when many of us tell ourselves "maybe I don't have a problem after all." We then repeat until we get into more social, legal and health trouble. So just be aware that you're going to hear that addiction talking, and that's where sites like this and AA can be so valuable, because when you talk about those cravings they lose their power. You're in the right place at a meeting, and don't sweat the experience with the police, God bless them (I mean that.) Lots of us have had run-ins with them due to our addiction - nothing to be ashamed of. If anyone knows how destructive alcoholism is, it's cops. They end up being the mechanism by which a lot of us are brought into a new an healthier life - it often takes that. You're in the right place - keep hitting meetings, find a sponsor and if you feel like taking a drink, pick up the phone, hop on this site and/or get to a meeting.

I think the worst of it peaks at day 3-4, however unwinding years of addiction and poisoning takes time, regard it as an adventure into the unknown.

It is worth the trouble

That will do it for sure - may have saved your life! Wish they'd come to my house about 20 years ago.....

Day by day you'll get better - everyone is different, of course. In a week or two you'll feel much better.

Doctor???

Pleased to meet you retiredusaf. You're among friends who care. Once you're through the rough part you never have to go back there. We're all with you - you're going to make it.
