15 Days
15 Days
15 days ago I was an emancipated malnourished total mess whose first action upon waking for weeks was to try to down a beer in between the gagging ...by 9 or 10 am I would have managed to down about six beers....and continue all day long.
I was desperate. My liver enzymes were 3 times normal, my doctor had warned me I HAD to quit drinking, and I was seriously worried. I'm really not ready to die yet.
I knew it was time to seriously smarten up or die an early death. I came back here looking for help, still drinking too, and not in the best of moods. Can't thank the people here that helped me then, you know who you are...:-)
I quit cold turkey and tried to check into 2 different detox facilities in my area only to be told there was a long waiting list.
The detox nurse told me if I quit myself at home, by the time she had found a bed for me, I likely would be over the withdrawals and not need detox.
She told me I had 3 choices:
1) Quit and detox at home.
2) Go to emergency if and when needed.
3) Continue drinking and wait for a bed.
I did it at home....the first 3 days I basically laid flat on my back with a bucket beside me to puke into...I couldnt eat or drink anything without throwing it back up.....not one moment of sleep either.
Now 15 days later, the difference is like night and day.
I am back to eating healthy, I've gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks, I'm sleeping somewhat normally now, and...I feel GOOD!
When I look in the mirror now, I can recognize the reflection once again.
Instead of an emancipated haunted man, grey with sunken cheeks......
There is a man with color back in his face, radiating strength, with twinkling eyes.
Now my routine upon awakening, instead of reaching for a beer, is to drop and give 20 pushups, 20 situps...hop in the shower, eat a big bowl of whole grain cereal loaded with a banana and fresh berries, take a multivitamin....then...
Take my dog for a morning walk up the mountain behind my place.
The dog sure is appreciating me not drinking :-)
Have a great day everybody....this sober business ..TOTALLY ROCKS!!
