what do you think?
I work for a local newspaper in production
I've had an idea and wonder what you all think. I was thinking that I could write a small article about life as an alcoholic and how it affects us and our families, maybe a diary. What do you think?

Awakenings
Recovery stories from people who have made it.
Sounds like a good idea if the editor would go for it. Could sell it to him/her as a public sevice commitment as well as something that holds stories of hope and seeing the underdog win.

Hi Hiney.....I think that's a wonderful idea..I'd read something like that, and it might save one person from ever getting involved with drinking, or let some who haven't seeked help, and let them know they aren't alone.
Wishing you all the best.

I would mention that I choose AA but nothing about anyone or anything in the meetings I would give phone numbers of all support groups in my area including AA. If this is wrong I wont do it. I thought we tried to help fellow sufferers

When I was in Fla. on vacation I read an aritical in the newspaper about a woman who lost everything it was that very aritical that got me on the road to want to recover.
So yes, you artical will help people very much.

I used to work as a newspaper reporter years ago. There's definitely loads of material for a feature story or even a package of stories there. I think it would make for fascinating reading, including a story that discussed what AA is all about. There's so much misinformation and so many mistaken ideas about alcoholism in general and AA in particular.
Bottom line, I think it's a fantastic idea. If you ever want any help brainstorming the story or some free (and constructive) editorial commentary, feel free to PM me.
Chy - What is ESH? I've seen the term, but can't unscramble the acronym. Thanks.

By the way, it's astounding how much alcoholism there is in journalism (or at least in my own experience in newspapers). Including myself, probably a quarter to a third of the last newsroom I worked in was alcoholic. The one before that was a very small paper. The editorial staff consisted of an alcholic, an addict, and me. I was a lot younger then, so I'm not sure how far gone I was then. In any case, that newsroom was somewhere between 66 and 100 percent.

Hiney--sounds like a great idea. I would follow the other poster's advice and try to leave AA out of it, though.
Puppies--I would be happy to chat sometime. Just let me know when!
Brookie--ESH stands for experience, strength and hope. (It took me a while to figure it out!)

Hiney:
I might suggest getting together with your local A.A. District's Public Information(PI) Chairperson. They always have great ideas and a wealth of experience in such matters. And afterall, that is why we elect trusted servants to fill those valuable service positions in the first place.
I appreciated reading Ted's "food for thought" regarding our AA Traditions on this thread as well. Sometimes "the good can be the enemy of the best" as Bill W., himself, found out as Tradition Two was hammered out upon the anvil of practical experience within A.A.
