No shame in my game

So I'm on vacation - first sober one since age 18 by the way (I'm 44). First thing that happens when we get to the beach house is mother-in-law starts unpacking wine & telling me all that she has & which bottles are for me. I looked at my husband & he nods his head that it's time to tell her.

"I no longer drink."

Blank stare.

"It's the choice I've made for myself and for my family."

Blank stare which turns into a quizzical look. Then she says, "Well I guess our liquor bill will be cut in half now."

I feel the tears start to well up and the crimson start to rise from my neck & onto my face. It's not sadness. It's embarrassment and even worse than that, it's shame. Husband grabs me, hugs me tight and whispers in my ear, "I'm so proud of you." Then he says to his mom, "I'm proud of her and her choice. She's amazing."

Pride. That's what I choose to believe in tonight. Pride beats shame. Every. Single. Time.

Tonight I remained sober. I'm winning this battle.

I'm proud of you.

My first sober vacation was great. So was my second. One of these days, my third shall be, too.

You're going to have a good vacation. You deserve it.

You did well to stay sober and to defend your decision.

Wow! Just wow! Im proud of you as well! I got teary eyed reading your post. You rock and so does your husband!! He is so supportive, that is awesome! Good for you! Pride does beat shame everytime, you are so correct. Inspirational post HeartsAfire! How long have you been sober?

Next time someone says something like that, don't let it upset you, just say "more money to go shopping with!! Yay me!" than jump up and down and clap your hands! lol

Very nice post. Im glad I clicked on it and read it!
