Going to a party tonight
I may cop some flack for this, but I've decided to go to a party tonight. There will be people drinking there. I don't have to go, but I'm actually feeling the urge to go out and mingle this weekend.
I've been missing social events lately and skipped a wedding a while back because I wasn't feeling strong enough nor did I feel particularly sociable. But I kind of want to get back to some semblance of a normal social life.
I have two good friends there I'll be with who know I'm not drinking. I'm not too concerned about the possibility of drinking. My will is strong and I haven't really had any urges or cravings since I quit. I have been around alcohol/in pubs recently and nothing bad has happened, although this will be the first time I'll be around a lot of friends gathered in one place who are drinking.
I plan to just go for the first two-three hours before people get too silly. Hopefully I'll even have a good time.

no flack - just the observation that there's probably a dozen other things you could do tonight to mingle with people and not be around alcohol, sick.

Hi sotc, I understand wanting to go and also being a little hesitant. A couple of my college buddies and their wives are coming over to spend afternoon tomorrow. I invited them weeks ago and had forgotten about it. When they contacted us a couple of days ago to confirm, I kind of wanted to cancel. I don't mind if they drink, but Im definitely going to keep my guard up. I do enjoy their company and can't hideout forever. I hope you have fun!

Thanks guys. My friend who I'm going with is taking her car, which I take as a good sign. She won't be drinking either (much anyway!).
I'll definitely just head home if I'm feeling uncomfortable, but for now I want to try this on for size.

I'm home, and still sober. Stayed until 10 and actually had a good time. Was good to see old friends. Maybe it was a tamer party than some I've been to, but I noticed other people really don't drink that much! Interesting...
