Any advice on dual diagnosis?

Hi, I have previously posted regarding my son and his substance abuse. After a very wild and twisted road I was told today that he is being dual diagnosed, schizo affective with a substance abuse diagnosis too. One again I am reeling with emotion . Has anyone else out there have experience with this?

Dear Lad,
In a word...yes.
Hang on tight. Educate yourself on the mental health disorder your son has.
Also the meds that are used to help stabilize symptoms, it's trial and error.. And these psych meds...they can take weeks and months to achieve the desired outcome.
Have a plan and do not be alone in this.
The more sober my daughter got, the more mental illnesses popped out. Some days
I didn't recognize who I was talking to. I learned NOT to take things so personally
with her. But once she was stabilized, it was like she had returned to me!
I'm sorry this is happening to you, but try to accept it and move forward. There is life
after dual diagnosis.
Hugs and I do care,
TF

I am sorry for what you are going through. Please take care of yourself. My AH has not been diagnosed but I'm pretty sure that he also has dual diagnosis.
