She died

A 24 year old girl who I was mentoring died recently. She had only drank two bottles of wine a day for four years and died of liver complications. She was a well-loved teacher and was successful in every aspect of the word.

But then she died from drinking.

I was wondering in a morbid-selfish way, that how am I still alive when I drank much more than she did daily for 12 more years during a time when that lifestyle was encouraged where I lived (LA).

She is now gone, at 24 years old. An absolutely horrific age to die.

I'm numb, devastated and dumbfounded.

Sorry to share such a bad event, but I had to come and post something.

I'm truly sorry for this loss of life.

A sad reminder that we are NOT invincible.

That is very very sad. I am so sorry for the loss of this young woman. Who would probably not have dreamed that she could die so young and so soon, from drinking.
Frightening, and so sad.

Such a shame, I am so sorry for your loss. This disease doesn't discriminate age, race or rank. If we drink, we are as equally vulnerable as her fate. Time waits for no one. You must cherish your life and health and sobriety every day that you have it. It is a gift.

I am sorry for your loss, her loss, and those that loved her. I posted a similar story a week or two ago. My friend was in his 30s and committed suicide.

Most people seem to think that it will never happen to them but you do not have to be around the recovery community for very long to realize a lot of people die. My sponsor said, "You will need to learn how to step over the bodies."

Quit, and stay quit. You will never know when you've used up your last recovery

Sorry for the many affected by your protégés passing.

Many here (me) survived simply by grace....

My son is 26 and his girlfriend is 25.....they are just really starting their lives. She was only 24....still a baby. God rest her soul. Alcoholism is an absolutely horrible disease. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I know what you mean, SunsetTattoo. I drank 3 bottles of wine a day for years, and before I got into wine it was a 12 pack of craft/microbrew beer a day, or a bottle of single malt...or if I was broke just a bottle of vodka. I drank hard for longer than that poor girl even lived, and somehow it didn't kill me outright.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a sad thing to lose a friend, even worse to see them lose their life so young.

I have no easy answers for why we are still here, except maybe that our job's not done?

This is why alcoholism is a real disease.. not something people inflict upon themselves for fun.

As for why your still here all I can say is maybe to continue to mentor and help others! stay strong
