Day 6! Anyone taking kudzu or other supplements?
Day 6! Anyone taking kudzu or other supplements?
Morning!
I've been taking kudzu and really think it's helping. Wondered if anyone else was taking it, what dose and if they think it's helping also.
And what other supplements would be useful?
Thank you

Hi, I am taking Kudzu and defo works for me! I am also taking Vitamin B and Iron. Kudzu is the key though, really works I think!
Hi wastinglife,
The kudzu is to help with alcohol cravings. I haven't eaten a healthy balanced diet for a while but once I've got over my sugar and chocolate cravings which have taken over from the alcohol cravings it's next on my list! Along with losing 50lb

I tried Kudzu in pill form. I think it was quite a high concentration of 750mg or so. Three pills a day. Anyways i found it did nothing so I stopped. For me my addiction is all mental. I really don't physically crave alcohol in any way. So I don't know how kudzu is supposed to help with the mental cravings. I guess it might be for some people Psychosomatic taking a pill everyday but not in my case.

I'm personally not a big fan of pills and supplements unless I know they are specifically necessary or helping. When I was younger I was more into experimenting with supplements and it happened I overdosed them. A multivitamin a day (which I have been taking for many years), and I took a vitamin B complex in the ~first month of sobriety daily. Now just the multi and I try to eat a varied diet without any specialty, restriction or extremes.
I love supplements but my doctor recently told me to knock it off. They are too hard on the liver (?)
I have heard that from a few doctors as of late. I was shocked.
I do still take them but not everyday. Vitamin D, Magnesium, Probiotics, Multi B. Maybe three times a week at max now.

I agree that a supplemental anti-craving root seems unnecessary - one of my problems in the past was taking something to fix something that could be fixed without taking something. That put the congratulations/credit on the thing, and I didn't feel that was in harmony with my recovery.
A varied nutrition plan and some exercise works for me. I do take a multi and Vitamin D. They are at the recommendation of my doctor.

I'm in the "don't take it if it isn't prescribed" camp too. And even if I am prescribed something I generally give the old 20 questions routine as to whether I really need it or not. It's hypocritical of course as I self medicated with copious amounts of alchohol for years, but moving forward my goal is to try and avoid dependence on any substance/drug/supplement/etc whenever I can. And I do realize there are a lot of people who benefit greatly from psychoactive drugs, diet supplements, etc.
This is a good thread for me to read. I gobble down any supplement I can get my hands on, thinking more is, well, more. I have been worried about this for some time but can't get any straight answers on what I need or don't need. I eat a very healthy diet and exercise regularly. But I had been so afraid of hurting my liver and body with alcohol that I would buy up anything I saw mentioned as good for your liver/antioxidant/good for skin/brain health.
I've tried to cut back and now am just taking milk thistle, vitamin b complex and omega 3. I take an additional multi-vitamin on days I am feeling very low energy (once every 10 days or so). Kudzu occasionally seemed to help, but I didn't see enough of a consistent result to continue.
Next on my list of specialists to see is a nutritionist or someone who can help me straighten out what, if any vitamins I should be taking.
It is frightening to hear that you can overdose on them or that they can be heavy for your liver. You think of vitamins as being good for you, just goes to show that even good stuff should be moderated and carefully considered.

I take quite a few. I experiment with lower dosages first, and I remove them if I have headaches or other noticeable side effects. I take a multi, a B complex, fish oil, coconut oil, D, C, a magnesium/potassium/calcium powder, glutamine powder, a whole foods greens antioxidant drink with pre- and probiotics, and a handful of different amino acids that I take as needed. The first six months of sobriety I followed loosely a vitamin plan from Seven Weeks to Sobriety (Joan Mathews Larson), and now I'm following a six month plan out of The Mood Cure by Julia Ross to see if the amino acids are going to clear up the residual mood issues I sometimes have. So far, so good. No side effects other than some minor headaches from the Tryptophan, and I just lower the amounts or skip a day. This is a temporary regimen that I'll come off of in 6 months or so, and will continue only with the basics - multi, B complex, D, coconut oil, fish oil, etc.

Hi MavisTheFairy13,
How is the kudzu working - did u continue to have benefits?
How much are you taking per day? Do you take it everyday? I drink every days so assume I need to take it every day. Does it actually stop you craving or you still crave but when you start drinking you don't care if you continue drinking or not or not?
thanks
