I want to stop

It's been 15 years and its gotten worst every year. I missed another day of work this week, stuck in bed, feeling like I failed, feeling disgusting and sick.
I finally feel done with this. I want to stop.

I knew quitting could be dangerous health-wise, but looking online - I had no idea! I'm a little scared. My drinking has been daily for many years, but not very heavy. But I'm still scared of going back to it when the anxiety and if any other symptoms get bad. I drank because of anxiety. And now I'm going to feel my regular anxiety, on top of my withdrawal anxiety. Which in turn makes me anxious. :P What a mess.

But I'm done. And whatever help I can find, I'm taking. I don't want to end up like some of my family members. This is the 4th day. I did drink 4oz last night because I was scared of going completely cold-turkey.
I want to learn more about mild/mod. withdrawal, and what I can expect. And what I can do to really stop and deal with whats coming.
I'm glad this forum exists.

Welcome to day 1, Phinix! You can do this. As far as withdrawals, I am right there with you in early sobriety (day 17). I experienced fatigue, mental foginess, sugar cravings, and irritability. My anxiety was much worse when I was drinking. I've had good days and bad days (today, for example, I am struggling). There is a lot of support and understanding here. Everyone has been through the same thing you're going through now.

Detoxing from alcohol can be dangerous and it's always a good idea to talk to your dr.

The best way to stop is to just stop, that's it. You will be able to manage and we're here to offer support.

Hello Phinix. Regarding your question of what to expect in terms of withdrawal: Good question. It's always good to be prepared, but keep an open mind. One person's experience with withdrawal differs from another.

So far, I prepare for the worst and roll with the punches.

Congratulations on your decision to quit drinking. You won't regret it.

Welcome Phinix

There's a thread of people's experiences here:

Like Anna, I always recommend folks see a Dr, but if you're already in day 4, best wishes to you.

Glad you've joined us

Phin, it's safer and a whole lot more likely to succeed if you talk to your doctor first, being as honest as you can. Don't be ashamed, there's a lot of drinkers out there and doctors prefer patients to be honest.
Just going at it cold turkey could be very bad for your health and hard to maintain.
