Needed milk... just pulled into the Kwik Mart... and then....

So I was on my way to my Lady's house and I needed milk for a protein shake about 40 minutes after a hard workout at the gym....

On the way was a Kwik Mart / gast station / booze store....

As I sat in my van, pouring the milk into my shaker I had a flashback to sitting in front of liquor stores, pouring vodka into my soda that I'd dumped out to make room for vodka so I could start drinking it right away and get enough in me to get buzzed by about the time I got wherever I was going - but not enough to be in my bloodstream yet in case I got pulled over....

Sure made me feel grateful to be pouring milk into my shaker to make a protein shake.

Smiling at my Lady clear-headed as I arrived for dinner felt all the more wonderful with that memory left behind at the Kwik Mart parking lot.

Great post! Glad we are all on track to happier and healthier living! After all this life is very short and we only get one shot! Gotta get back to the gum myself

I can do all things through he who strengthens me

Brilliant post. What an empowering feeling that must be, actively CHANGING the outcome like that. I have been attending spin and weight training classes at the gym regularly and I know the great feeling of having that protein shake after a good work out. In fact, I just had mine. :-)
Let's keep it up together. Changing habits is a conscious choice.

I had a similar experience last night. A friend of mine was visiting from out of town and we agreed to meet at an upscale bar/restaurant. He didn't know that I no longer drink. Anyway, we visited, he had a few drinks. I had a couple club sodas. Then we said our good-byes and went to our respective cars.

As I was driving home, I pulled in front of a car that I probably should have let go past. The car pulled up behind me and followed me (or so I thought) for several blocks. Immediately, I was panic-stricken, even though I had broken no traffic rules. But I was SO used to being paranoid about the drive home from a bar - a drive that I had made while intoxicated WAY too many times. It took me a while to realize that I was sober and that I didn't have to drive home in fear. What a wonderful feeling of relief.

I had a nice visit with an old friend. Didn't embarrass myself. Didn't get picked up for DUI. Slept well and woke up hangover-free.

And that, good people of SR, was Reason #347 why I am preferring my new life of sobriety over my old life of being a drunk.

Dead-on! I don't make a fraction of the trips I used to either.

I can completely relate to dumping the soda so you can fit vodka into it...wow, those were the bad old days, huh? Grateful to be sober today. Thank you so much for the post.
