Enjoying an old friend
Enjoying an old friend
So, a good story...
I have a few friends from my "past life" that I want to keep...
A very good friend came to visit me this weekend. He lives in a town 10 hours drive away; he was in my region for work this week.
He comes & spends the weekend a few times a year. Usually this involves a fair amount of beer drinking, as we both love craft brews.
This time, I am in week 7 of sobriety & had some trepidation about the weekend.
I texted him before he arrived & told him that I wasnt drinking but didn't mind of he did.
It was a wonderful weekend & I enjoyed it sober! He did drink in the evenings, but I drank tea, etc. We had all the same fun as we would have if I had been drinking - played many games of cribbage, talked, played disc golf for hours (18 holes x 2!), ate burritos, walked in the autumn woods, talked more...
I told him experiences I'm having in recovery. He asked me to explain the steps. He asked me if I wanted him to accompany me to my aA meeting on Sat (& looked slightly relieved when I said no, but told him how much it meant that he had offered).
He told me last night how proud he was of my strength in changing my life.
It was eye-opening, heart opening, and a very fun weekend.
Lesson - I get to have it all - sobriety AND this wonderful friend who happens to drink beer... It merged two parts of my being & reinforced that I can make my own choices.
The other thing I was proud of is that in the middle of the visit I did take off & go to my meeting (he went thrifting during). Honoring my sobriety..

What a fantastic & inspiring post. I'm just beginning to test the waters of merging 2 worlds together (my sober one w/friends who happen to drink). I appreciate your share so much & your friends sounds awesome.
