Going to My First Meeting

OK, I know this is not groundbreaking news, but I'm planning to go to my first meeting (in 6 years) this afternoon. It is in a good location, women-only, and it works with my schedule. I'm only putting this out there so I'm "telling someone" and therefore accountable somehow. Oh, the mind games we play...

OK, that's why I posted...to be accountable! I drove to the meeting, drove around the parking lot, tried to see the people going in, chickened out and left. However, I then drove to the bookstore and bought the Big Book at the direction of my temporary online sponsor. So I guess that's something.

Tomorrow I will try again...

I drove up and parked in the parking lot, sat there, and drove away - a few times! That's ok. Try it again tomorrow. Nothing like conquering a fear.

@Sober Jennie, what made you finally go in? Just curious about how many times I can expect to be the weirdo in the parking lot. ;-)

Keep coming close, it works if ya work it!!!

Sometimes it takes the realization we have gotten to the point we cannot imagine life with or without alcohol....When one gets to that point, we have to take that plunge....the water is only cold for a few seconds. Then, your never a first timer again!

You can do it .....
Maybe read end of page 83 and all of 84 - the promises. They do happen!!! If you'd like these in your life you'll have to go inside....

A joke to reflect on.....it's old, like me but maybe it will help.

A gent wants to win the lottery and prays daily for this to happen.
He prays and prays and prays.

God, please let me win the lottery! I really need the money and would promise to help so many others.

Years of this go by.....
Finally, God cannot listen to the same prayer over and over and speaks to the man!

IF you want to win the lottery, at least meet me half way and buy a ticket!

peace

My desire to go inside overcame my fear of all the "what ifs"

I even got LOST trying to find a meeting once, and boy, did my AV tell me, GIVE UP, you're lost, you're late, you're the fool, you're THAT newbie, etc.! But I defied it and showed up, lost, late, and scared.

I figure, it's when the fear of going back to drinking outweighs the fear of recovery/sobriety? Idk. You're circling the wagons - you'll get in. Like they say for workouts, "the first time you do anything, you're guaranteed a PR!"

I like that, Rogue! My goal right now is to do something every day. So far it's been things like, find a temporary online sponsor, go to a meeting (OK fine, the parking lot), get the book, read the book, post here, be conscious about being more honest all the time. Of course, I am VERY open to any and all suggestions! Thank you so, so much.

As someone who thought "**** AA and NA" just a few months ago there's nothing to be scared of. The thought of attending your first meeting is MUCH scarier then actually walking in and getting surprised by how incredibly friendly everyone is. The people at a meeting will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. I was honestly in shock. I can't believe how scared I was at first now looking back. I really wish I had a more open mind years ago now because it would have helped.

I have a meeting tonight and am excited about going now.

Go back again and go in this time. You don't have to say anything, just listen. Maybe get some phone numbers of people to call if you are tempted or just need support.

Rogue...BEST movie ever. "I'm sailing!"

Thanks Least, I will absolutely do that. The thought of calling anyone on the phone is kind of terrifying, but I am open. I have to be.

I sometimes try to remember back to what I would have been doing if I was still drinking, and that gives me a perspective on how far I've come!!

On a Tuesday afternoon could you have seen yourself driving into the parking lot of an AA meeting? sure you didn't go in, but that's ok!!

You're moving mountains!! Keep it going!!
