Sister in Law ready to kick it

Please take the following with as many grains of salt as you wish, please hold the sympathy as it is not required.

My sister in law is 48 years old and in that time has managed to destroy her liver and kidneys and cannot even breath on her own. This (as the doc said) is a direct result of her drinking behavior.

She has alienated her children, husband and family, because of her drinking. I do not consider myself a callous person but I'm having a very hard time feeling any pity for this person or her useless Husband who sat back and allowed this to happen because he wasn't willing to deal with the truth. The truth being she guzzled vodka from the bottle on a daily basis. I have never in my life seen a person age so much in 5 years, what a f**king sad state of affairs.

She was a pleasant enough person when she wasn't drunk or lieing her face off about her condition. The fact of the matter is she did not want to quit or admit she had a problem. She felt she had the situation under control.

And now she is going to die. Have a nice night and remember we never have it under control.

Such a sad story FDG and I think I understand where you're coming from. I lost a "friend" (more of a drinking buddy/acquaintance) recently, just after I quit drinking ... it was publicly stated that she had a mysterious bacterial infection and consequently all her organs shut down. All those who know her, know the truth ... she drank herself to death. I too felt a little callous about my response ... that she refused to admit she had a problem and ultimately it killed her. There was fear in it for me as well, however .... I don't want to die like that, don't want to leave that kind of legacy for myself or for my sons. It strengthened my resolve because it truly scared me. There but for the grace of God, go I.

It's such a sad thing to see and my heart goes out to the SIL. I got notice a little while back that an alcoholic former colleague passed from presumable related health issues. It sure can be a powerful reminder that things need to change or stay on track.
