What is recovery?

Defining abstinence is easy to but what is recovery? You can have abstinence without recovery but you can not have recovery without abstinence.

So what is thus recovery stuff all about?

In terms of addiction I find I can be recovered from my alcoholism and drug addiction.

For me this process has stimulate a much bigger issue of enlightenment or awareness. This brings the rest of my life into focus where clarity has removed illusions that once existed challenging my core beliefs and causing me to make changes, which in turn I find is enhancing my life.

Beyond alcohol or drugs I find enlightenment to be more synonymous with respect to general recovery.

I agree with the dictionary.com definition; which defines recovery as the restoration of health from sickness.

Abstinence is not drinking. If you are happy abstinent, then you are recovering.

Two things IMO.

1. You have negative feelings about alcohol.
2. Physically you do not crave alcohol.

Leaving behind a life that brought me to the darkness. Moving past my fears and hurts and disappointments. Creating and building a new healthier lifestyle. Having faith. For me it's more than abstinence. It's abstinence alone creates a dry drunk in myself.

I have no problem at all if some define recovery as abstinence - I think recovery means different things to each of us.

For me, giving up drinking alcohol and getting high was a fundamental part of my recovery - but it's not been the biggest or greatest part.

The greatest part for me has been growth - and I am eternally grateful for that growth.

About living a meaningful and happy life, being sober and achieving sobriety!
