Deciding to quit
Hello everyone,
I have made the decision to quit drinking - this time for good. I've gone here and there with taking breaks (22 days is my longest) but after I think I've "tamed the beast" I only end up full circle back to where I started.
Alcohol is starting to take a toll on my job and my family. To those of you reading this, who like me were impressed with the introductions, here's where I am lately:
1) I only drink to get drunk
2) After a party or a BBQ, I keep drinking when I get home.
3) I show up to work hung over more than not.
4) I apologize for my drunk actions too often.
5) and the scariest, when I woke up out of a fitful sleep at 3am, too hung over to sleep, I had strange thoughts of wondering how much happier people would be without me around. I'm tired of apologizing for my drinking.
It was then I realized I need to stop drinking. I'm so far 48 hours into my journey.
Drinking is a large portion of our culture - seems you can't go anywhere without finding it and people expecting you to drink it. I know that my having the group and my best friend as "sponsors" I'll be able to successfully "reset" my life.
Thank you everyone. I look forward to learning, growing and sharing in success with you all.

My friend has been sober for 6 years. All his stories of drinking are a lot like mine, and probably yours. Alcohol abuse\alcoholism is more common than many people think.
I'm committed to actually waking up early and facing the day, rather than roll out of bed at noon to shut the curtains.
If my friend's stories about the last 6 sober years are an indication, it's a much better life.
Sounds a lot like me back in my hard drinking days...Don't miss any of it, and neither will you.
Besides actually stopping drinking, the next toughest part for me was still attending BBQ's, parties, fish fries, etc with my still drinking friends..Them encouraging me to have a beer, questions about why I was not drinking, etc. Lots of discussion on here about that. Might as well get you a plan in place.
I simply said "No, had enough for a while." Was firm, no meant no. Your real friends will quickly let the issue pass.
Welcome, more support here than you can imagine.

Hi TXATP! I'm glad you found us & decided to join.
You'll never regret taking control of your life. I was headed into dangerous territory too - and it feels so good to be free. You can do it.
