Can we start a music thread here?

Music is my passion, I love almost all genres. Well except for Jazz, couldn't ever really get into jazz.
What songs have had meaning to you in your recovery- both high and low spots?

I'll start with a song I heard today that immediately made me think of all my new sober friends here. I think the lyrics ring true about the sadness and weakness but we are all here, people helping people.

And here is a song that I listened to in my darker days. I remember running and running and crying and crying. The answer to the question is a resounding "NO" you will not always feel this empty.

It's a lovely tune though. Just gorgeous and so emotional.

while i love music, one of my things i had to stop doing was listening to music and letting my head drift off into fantasy.
for me nothing beat a good night in with sad music to listen to and to cry to with a good drink in my hand
so i leave the music behind these days as i can still listen to songs and end up dreaming again, so for me its like a trigger for me to wallow in self pitty hence i can not do that anymore
dont know if others are the same on here ? but i do know when i mention it in aa meetings people end up laughing as they to used to do the same thing. and they dont do it anymore either.

I love this idea. It's so much easier to get something from a song then a book when your brain is still reeling. What I gravitate to keeps changing. When you post the url I can listen to it and still go on SR. Listening to the first Birdy song now. It's awesome.
This is one I really liked about 7 months

This one makes me think of you desypete. I hesitated to post it. I think he describes some of what I have heard you to say.

I always loved Joni Mitchell, too--she could really nail it.

But I can't take it anymore. I can't afford to live in those places anymore.

I like my music lighter nowadays.

Music is what you make it. My tastes are changing with sobriety, but music can be inspirational, not just something in which to wallow. Music's purposes are malleable and varied...

Here's a live performance (some strong language) from one of my favorite songwriters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jIQC0AH0HU He wrote the first song (Two Balloons) in rehab about twenty years ago. Long live recovering junkies!!!

Music has been an important part of my life since my early teens. I've learned that one of the best ways I can both explore and express myself is in music and music videos. My tastes are very broad and ecclectic, I like all sorts of genres, both modern and classical.

Too much for what I could post here, but for some random songs that usually impulsively get stuck in my mind, check out my "blog" here on SR. One reason that I do such a "blog" is similar to why many people like to journal. It's a great way for me to reflect on myself, my emotions, and my motivations in the moment.

This is my song when I'm feeling like I'm about to break, and with a few good kicks to the teeth today, It's a bit fitting.

Bread - Everything I own - YouTube

Bread-- Everything I own.
Let me explain, its not about booze, its about losing my mom, who in my life was the best person to ever walk on earth. And I really lost it when she was dying and when she died. This song propelled me to live better in her memory.

Great one! I was thinking of that one too. It really covers the pain of so many things well.

This sound is astoundingly beautiful. The tone is somewhat sad and the lyrics could be interpreted in a negative way but I choose to listen to it with a positive reflection on staying sober. He says "you already know how this will end" and I think of that part as knowing what will happen IF I drink- not WHEN I will----- because I won't.
I also hang tight to these lines:
Now you've seen his face
And you know that there's a place in the sun
For all that you've done
For you and your children
No longer shall you need
You always wanted to believe
Just ask and you'll receive
Beyond your wildest dreams

I've always been very into EDM (techno, house, etc.), a lot of people associate that music with partying. But the reality is, I had a metal phase, 80s phase, 90s phase, pop phase, hip-hop phase, etc. I listened to nearly every genre of music while drunk and/or high. It was either stop listening to music altogether (which would be ridiculous in my opinion), or learn to enjoy it in sobriety.

And I've found, I still enjoy EDM very much, just in sobriety now. Something that has helped is realizing that the majority of DJs and producers spin this music in complete sobriety. It was created in sobriety and intended to be heard in that way by those who created it. Just because many drink and/or drug while listening doesn't change that. Therefore, I'm now getting far more out of the music then I ever did when drunk and/or high.

Here's a more pop-sounding EDM song I've listened to a lot lately, very catchy and atmospheric, lyrics are cool too:

Good song, I like it. And yes, I recall reading something or hearing something about how the majority of DJ's are sober and into a sober scene. Can't remember where I saw that, maybe an article in Rolling Stone or something...

This is one of the "cheesy" songs I would not usually post on a website of mine, but one that hits quite close to my soul. I love the peace and human connection it implies. R.I.P Patrick Swayze of course.

My latest gf (now ex) sent me this song many times. We also used to dance together.
