Ready for a new beginning
Ready for a new beginning
Hello:
I am returning to a sober life after 3 years of drinking. I have previously been sober for long stretches of time, including six and a half years from 2005 to 2011.
I have finally decided to stay compliant with my meds for depression and that has made a great difference since I no longer feel I have to self medicate with alcohol.
Also, my DD29, who suffers from mental illness, had a precious baby boy who I am helping raise. He needs a sober grandmother who will provide safety, love and structure.
I am grateful to be alive.
Great to be here.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.
I am thankful I was able to inspire some of you starting the sometimes hard but ultimately wonderful journey to a sober life. My experience is that it is a whole lot easier to stay sober than to get sober. So if you haven't relapsed don't.
Dee I was a member here before, but decided to start with a new identity. I remember the warm and fuzzy feelings this forum always gave me. THANK YOU for your faithful dedication to this forum and for being here after so many years.
During my last relapse of 3 years, there were short periods of sobriety, weeks and even months, depending on how compliant I was with my antidepressant. I suffer from a mood disorder and if left untreated, I look for alcohol/shopping/overeating to alter the way I feel. It's a temporary remedy that never works and has brought all kinds of regrets (financial, emotional, medical - I am pre-diabetic, overweight ).
My experience is that there is absolutely no glamour in drinking. Breaking sobriety and starting again sucks big time. Many don't make it back. I was shocked by Philip Seymour Hoffman's reportedly one time relapse in over 20 years. Pictures of his children at his funeral are seared in my mind for ever.
I am now typing on my tablet, with my wonderful 9 month old grandson a few feet from me, jumping up and down in his bouncer, trying to grab our dog's tail when she walks by. I am safe and sober. Life can be grand if we lay off the sauce.
We can do this.
