Hello

First post here. Been battling a drinking problem for 10 years now. I'm a functional alcoholic so I'm able to fool most folks but it has become too much to bear so I want to reach out for help. I'm a bit scared about it though. I think I need some counseling but that has been a step I have avoided for a while. So in any case, here I am. And well, hopefully this is the beginning of a new chapter.

Welcome! This forum is a great first step in helping you as it has helped me through my first few weeks of recovery. I visit it every day -- especially during my most vulnerable craving hours and on weekends when the pressure to drink seems to escalate. Good luck in your sobriety journey - it's going to be worth it!

I'm not sure beyond simply verbalizing what I've been experiencing. I think I need to attend some face-to-face meetings in my area to really get at it and overcome it. I've consistently NOT been remaining sober in the week since I've introduced myself here BUT I have engaged my brother and sister over the last couple days as far as what I'm going through and they are supportive.

It isn't easy reaching out to family for me because most of my uncles were alcoholics and the range of devastation they created ranges from suicide to taking the lives of others via DUI accidents. I don't want to end up in either category.

So I'm just kind of here for now, I guess. My goal for the coming week is finding an AA meeting in my area.

Have you made it to a meeting yet like you mentioned? And how about the counseling? Have any particular therapist in mind? Also, have you considered doing inpatient rehab or perhaps IOP?
