Being overweight because of alcohol

A lot of people have been talking about their weight, something I've had problems with too. We all know alcohol has a lot of calories, so I was wondering how many of you became fat due to drinking?

I hit 250 and am down to 200. Still overweight, but chubby, not out of breath after running for 10 seconds.

Also, have you experienced weight loss or even weight gain since you quit?

Wow, 50 pounds, good for you!!

Over the last few years I gained almost 30lbs from drinking and not exercising. A LOT for me!! Since quitting I've lost 20lbs or so. Much of this came from a big commitment to cardio and strength training, and reducing my processed food & sugar intake. It's come off very gradually and people are now saying I look slender!

I had gained 15 pounds from drinking. I've been sober nearly a year (tomorrow!), and I've lost it all. Like SonomaGal, it was a gradual loss--such a fabulous bonus!

Congratulations on your 50 pound loss, MrBen! That's awesome!

Mine was really gradual, a pound a week most of the time. It's the only way I could do it, I can't handle being hungry!

I gained about 50 lbs from drinking every night and then eating badly the next day in an attempt to cure the hangover, which never worked. I am looking forward to looking healthy again. Day 19 here and down about 8 lbs.

Absolutely. I was 244 pounds at the height of my drinking. As a 5'4" woman in her early 40's....I was getting scared. After I got sober 14 months ago I totally revamped my lifestyle and started eating healthy.

Oh, and take away all that booze 14 months later I am 135 pounds....that's a 109 pound loss!!!!!

Ah yes....I say my life is so much healthier now:-)

Yes gained weight , I would drink , not work out and eat like a pig hung over. For years...I am only on day ten but my clothes feel loose. Right now I want to hit 30 days ( to feel myself 100% ) and then start a workout plan. I always had a nice petite body before alcohol was my main sugar/ calorie intake hahaha!

Hi there
My weight gain is totally down to booze.
I found this out by being the only pregnant woman I know to lose weight... Was eating totally normally and was not experiencing morning sickness the only thing different was removing the wine...
Should never have picked it up again!

Me too. I lost weight the first month of my pregnancy, then despite all the pasta and ice cream I was eating, I still didn't gain any until about 5 months along, and even then only gained a total of 19 pounds by the birth.

Course...once I had her, I started drinking every day and that was it:-(

I was kind of the opposite. When I drank I never ate. I'm surprised I didn't develop a eating disorder or blow out my heart living on nothing but wine and maybe a chicken wing once in awhile.

I think I do pretty good now. I try to eat healthy most days and same...cutting out processed foods and sugar most days allows me to eat the treats one day a week or so.

Congratulations to all of you! That's awesome MrBen!! And high 5 to you DollyAngel! That's fabulous.

It's so nice to hear stories of people taking care of themselves. We don't need to worry about some perfect weight or anything but it sure does feel good to just have a nice balanced healthy life. Amazing how a body just starts balancing all on its own once you eliminate the extremes.

Great topic! After almost 6 years of sobriety, sadly I relapsed last October (long story). I gained 25 pounds from drinking in just nine months (since my relapse) Ugh!

Anyway...I'm back on the road to recovery so hopefully those pounds will go away again. That's not my primary concern right now but it would be nice! :-)

Congrats to everyone, on the weight changes in sobriety!

I still tend to be a little paranoid when it comes to my weight - this goes back in my history of eating disorders to when I was younger. I was also paranoid about it while drinking - this was my main reason why I switched from drinking wine to vodka, when I did. Anyway, it was a funny thing for me because since my early 20's some people tended to say I could use ~10 pounds extra to what I had (~120 pounds at 5'7''). So it did happen during the last 2 years of my drinking, I was up to ~130. And I was told it looked good on me. I did not like it... now I'm down again to 118-120. No way I will start pouring wine down my throat to please certain people

I gained a ton of weight from booze. LOL at one point I even had a personal trainer and would have a drink BEFORE meeting him at the gym. Then I would go home and pour myself a glass of wine, I earned it right? I went to the gym for an hour!

Anyhow, I quit booze on Saturday morning, waking once again with a hangover, went on the scale this morning and was 5 lbs down!

Was 285 when I quit and am down to 210. Just 10 more lbs to go. Unfortunately, I developed a coke habit (cola) (funny, this is one of the few sites where you have to specify that) when I put the beer down. Working on that now.

I went from a high of 260 down to 200. I honestly think my stomach shrunk because I cannot eat a third of what I used to when I was drinking. I also quit smoking four months to the day today and luckily haven't gained any weight.
