thought for the day

Thought for the day: In my youth, the summer seemed to last forever. The summer school break seemed like it would never end. The days went on forever. Now, the days don't don't add up. It seems I count time in weeks and months - they go by so quickly now. I am striving to get back that youthful feeling of enjoying those long summer days not worrying about tomorrow.

I posted this ^^^ in the December thread. I thought I would share it on the newcomers forum. Maybe it's the alcoholic mind that has us racing through life.
We all need to slow down and enjoy life for what it is. Sure our lives and responsibilities change. Our priorities sometimes get in the way of taking a step back and savoring the beauty of living. Set aside at least one day a week to enjoy just to being alive.

So true. Everything seems like a blur now, drunk or sober, and often very little to show for the time that has passed me by. Reminds me of the lyrics from "Time" from Pink Floyd.

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say."

Brain, I think what you describe is the idea of living in the moment. When we are young (school age), we probably focus more on just enjoying life and also are often more enthusiastic because many experiences are still quite new, we have not encountered them many times. I became very jaded and cynical in my worst drinking times and also enjoy looking forward to most days with a positive spirit now.

Interesting that you put this in the context of summer - I seriously had not enjoyed the summers for I don't know how many years... preferred the other darker, colder, and gloomier seasons because I felt they matched my internal landscape better. It's great to be able to see the beauty in small and simple things!
