sugar cravings

Hi there. I'm on day 6 of not drinking. Feeling so much better than before, but have really intense sugar cravings. This isn't my first time starting down the path to recovery and a new me (I hope!), but it is the first time I'm asking all of you what you did to beat the sugar cravings. Give in? Try and ride out the cravings (along with everything else)? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is very common. Chocolate ice cream was a favorite of mine.

Thanks, Taking5! Yes, chocolate ice cream is a huge favorite of mine too.

I've given up caffeine, and as of today I haven't had a cigarette in three weeks, but I was hoping to keep my sugar intake under control. I feel like I've read somewhere that refined sugar is also bad for you when you stop drinking; but maybe I've just conjured that one up!

Hi Rachelle congrats on day 6.

Sugar cravings, I had them too. I didn't realise how much we put in our bodies with alcohol.

I had ice cream too. X

I think these are common. In my case they took a long time to settle down. Along yhe way i developed a sweet tooth for the first time in my life.

Early on i discovered that having something sweet in the evenings cut down the physical cravings.

Having a weakness for chocolate is a lot better than my drinking

I'm eating a Nerds Rope right now and my right pocket is stuffed full of Jolly Ranchers.

What sugar cravings?

Oh yeah, cravings for sugary snacks was something I had a lot of in the first couple of months, I think it is because of the amount of sugar in alcohol and when we deprive the body of that sugar it starts to want.

Well done on quitting, you are doing great.

Oh yeah.. I'm on day 7 and craving sugar like crazy. I'm just giving in to it these initial days. I don't even care for ice cream, but I found myself going to get a pint of ice cream and eating the whole thing. I just rationalize that it must be better than having 12 pints of beer at least...

Just listen to your body and eat what it asks for.
You get a fat hamburger craving, go for it!

You can sort the diet later down the recovery road.

The advice I got from AA members was "don't try to beat all your addictions at once". Focus on the alcohol issue. Heck even if I ate ice cream every day, I could never be arrested for "driving while fat".

I never had a big sweet tooth, but I quit caffeine at the same time as I quit drinking. I've been trying to eat a lot more fruits; oranges, apples, and I keep a large pack of dried bananas on my desk next to me. I think the natural sugars help a bit with my energy levels, but I may be projecting.

This is interesting - I have found my general appetite has been increased since I stopped (Day 8 now). Could well be sugar here too.

A general thread search for the words "Chocolate Ice Cream" immediately returned 250 results.

The sugar craving is common, allow yourself whatever you need early on. This is hard work and if sugar silences the AV then so be it. It should dissipate after a while.

LOL Displaced.
I have pretty strong sugar cravings also, and I eat what I want some days.
Probably not good to deny yourself too much, you'll start feeling deprived.
The diet can wait a bit until you feel stronger.
Congrats on 6 days!!

I think it's a natural side effect of ceasing our intake of alcohol.
I usually have one really intense episode within the first week and a half.
The last one made me drive to the local pharmacy, like a sugar-fueled zombie.
I sat in my car and devoured two bags of nasty gummy candy that I bought.
That night, I had a sugar hangover.
Now I moderate the candy! HA!
HOW IRONIC!

Lunar is spot on there, it gets better even quicker with a balanced diet.

For me giving it to sugar cravings made my cravings for alcohol stronger. My body doesn't process carbohydrates well.

Things got easier for me when I did not eat sugary food, but instead cut sugar and refined carbs from my diet. People vary with this, maybe best to talk to a dr about the right diet.

I gave into it in the beginning. I had enough trouble getting off the alcohol and sugar cut the cravings. Now I eat huge quantities of watermelon and blueberries instead.

Watermelon is awesome too! I did eventually have to switch over to fruit. I definitely still had my Ben and Jerry's days though!
