The Drunkest City
The Drunkest City
I know this is somewhat off topic
but it is good it is good info for
people in recovery where not to
move to. (:
You would never guess:
Fargo ND
28% of the residents are
classified as heavy drinkers.

Isn't ND where the current oil boom is in the US? Seems logical. A population of transients workers, probably mostly young men away from their families, making a lot of money and what else is there to do in Fargo for 10 months out of the year?
This was probably the article:
Fargo, N.D., deemed the drunkest city in America - NY Daily News
The problem though is it was based on a poll of populations as to what they drank, this data would be relying on those polled to be truthful, another article I found bases it on arrests, DUIs, liver deaths, DUI crashes, it does factor in a poll as to binge drinking too but on the whole a more tangible criteria:

I happen to live in Fargo. And there IS a lot of drinking here. But there are also 3 large universities here and I think that may skew the numbers a bit.
Ironically, Fargo is also the 3rd most secure place in America among mid-sized cities. And the Today show recently rated Fargo 3rd in the nation in the category of the Best Places to Raise a Child in the US. The crime rate here is very low. The economy is booming. People here are friendly and polite.
Alcohol is cheap and plentiful here. The winters are brutally long and cold. So, it is easy to hunker down with a bottle if you are inclined. A lot of people are. I was for about 20 years.
But don't put too much weight behind the statistic. I have managed to remain sober for going on 9 months in Fargo. So, it can be done.
I suppose I sound a little defensive. If so, my apologies. It's just that, well, it IS my home.

I'm sure we could probably create a list solely based on alcohol consumption/purchase receipts . . . but that again would have very little bearing on alcoholism.
Drinking alcohol in itself doesn't create addiction!!
Funny! I do not mean that Fargo is funny...just that early in the wee hours this morning when the SR site crashed, I googled "sober recovery" and a site listing the 'soberest cities' popped up.
There actually are cities that promote sobriety I had no idea.
