What is the reasoning behind a doctor that tells you to moderate?

That's crazy-talk.

Do what you think is best. Was he/she worried about withdrawal, or why did he say that?

Do they have detox units where you are? Otherwise, get yourself a babysitter to administer you rations of alcohol. That sounds crazy.

Ok, well it can be dangerous to withdraw from alcohol, so listen to your doctor.

The Mayo Clinic site warns against suddenly stopping and gives similar advice. We can't give medical advice here. Does your doctor understand that you really want to quit altogether? I know some doctors prescribe meds for a few days. Well, I really wish you well.

Withdrawing from Alcohol can be dangerous, things can go badly wrong with no warning at all.

Don't hesitate to get more medical advice.

The UK position seems to be try moderation/tapering first.

Not to offend, but I think it's a reflection on their overburdened health system more than anything else.

If you're unsure as to what to do contact your Dr again - make it plain that you've already stopped and you would prefer to continue that way.

See what he/she suggests.

Wise course of action and a great recommendation.

Whatever you decide, make sure you do this safe.
