Getting a Conscience
In times past I let people use me, and I also used them in order to get wasted. This is the nature of addiction. We allow others to walk all over us as long as it does not interfere with our getting drunk or high. Often times I would use these events as another excuse to go off the deep end. I also have to be honest and say there were just as many times, if not more, that I was the one using others for my own self-gratification. Recovery has a way of getting in the way of these behaviors. In working the program, I have learned that I do not need to let others walk all over me. I have also learned that I can’t just go around using others anymore. This thing called a conscience gets in the way.*
