New to the SobberRecovery community

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. I myself am not a recovering addict but am in a relationship with one and am looking for a bit of advice on what to expect when he comes home from rehab!

Thanks guys!

Hi and welcome wetsocks
You'll find a lot of support and advice here

I see you've found our Family and Friends forums too - you'll find a lot of experience down there as well.

Hi Wetsocks, I've been to rehab and they had a family liasion counsellor there.
She was a great support to my wife.

There was also a weekly support meeting with families of patients (inmates), while we were there.
If you haven't already, I would encourage you to find out whether such a service is available at your husband's facility.

Hi Sparkos,

Unfortunately my boyfriends facility is 5hrs drive away from me and I have not been involved in his treatment at the rehab as his parents felt it would be best if they handled it as they felt our relationship would get in the way of his treatment.

I have been looking into maybe him and I going to see an addiction counsellor closer to home once he is out but I'm not exactly sure if this is the right direction to go in. I was hoping to get some advice on what I can do to assist in his recovery process when he is out and what I could do to help our relationship.

I can see how this would be difficult for you.
Is your BF allowed phone calls?
Can you talk openly and honestly with the "in-laws"?
Will he be living with you when he comes out?
Why do the "in-laws" not want you involved?

I really do think you should be involved, especially if it's a long term relationship.

Good luck.

Hi and welcome,

The only thing I can tell you is my personal experience. When I came home from a 30 day rehab I had one person (a sister) that I wanted to talk with. But for the most part I was still very busy working on myself, needing to do outpatient work, meetings and getting back into a regular routine at home. Needed to find a job and clean up all the issues I had left undone. I was very busy to say the least.

Maybe you could write to him....Tell him you'll be there for him when he gets home...

I hope that helps a little.....
