Gambling addiction..& its victims...
Hi all...ive been sober for over 10 years. The problem is....I live in an apartment. Its a basement of my landlords house that's been converted into a full apartment with a private entrance. So....yeah..I live in the SAME house as my landlord. I gave them $9950 up front for a years rent. The ad said "Utilities included"... Problem is that they took all that money and went to the casino and lost it all in a weekend. Now they come home and see me still here...cuz ive paid to be here...but it all of the sudden...to them...doesn't seem that way. Seems like they look at me and think "Damn....I'm broke ....again..but heres this guy who gave me all this money that I then lost...but I still have to live up to what we agreed upon...." So now,...I live everyday with them resenting the fact that they have to let me live here. And Im sure to them...it FEELS like they are letting me live here for free....cuz they blew the money. So now...they tell me how im sky rocketing their utility bills...tell me to turn off lights....don't use this...don't use that....they even came down and took over half my light bulbs....and disabled the electric fireplace that was IN THE ORIGINAL AD as an amenity.....just to save money....ive got 5 months left and feel like my house not a home....
Get a copy of your states Landlord Tenant code, document every issue you have with your landlord, take pictures, etc., etc., just to cover your yourself. If the harassment becomes to much, contact the proper authorities, don't take it personally.
I PAID THEM.....UP FRONT...under the agreement that utilities were included.....that means I should be able to watch TV as much as I want....when I want....without them bitching...they even told me that I cannot use garlic to cook anymore.....

Can you come to an amicable agreement to get your 5 months back and move...?
My brother and I rented a small apartment to my med students in our parents home, we included utilities also. We were considerate and so were the tenants... please turn off AC and lights when you leave, nj is very hot humid in summer. We provided a timer to run AC an hour start time before they came home. When they left for a week, they would tell us so we could turn heat down.
it sounds like these people live close to your little apt. And are inexperienced in landlord tenant relationships.
good luck.

one thing about these trails in life -- most important
not to repeat our mistakes
I have been a landlord for much of my life
as you know now
what you did (fronting them all of that money) was foolish
a good friend of mine from work
killed himself (suicide) because of his casino gambling habit
I own the home we live in because
another friend lost it many years ago because of his excessive gambling
and he lost his wife
and he lost his kids
and he lost his job
Mountainman

Gambling is the same as cocaine. It has the same reward motivation pathway system. This means gamblers cannot stop themselves on their own once they cross that line. My father has lost everything to gambling and I have seen it first hand.
Do you have a contract? If you do this seems like it should be pretty straight forward. If not, it seems like this may be an expensive lesson. I would find a lawyer. I assume they have assets still (house) and you can attach a lien and there are rights you have. I would get educated on them and devise a plan.
If utilities are included yes, you should be able to use them as much as you see fit. Good luck and congrats on staying sober.

for what it's worth..i never saw anybody get addicted to something so quickly as gambling...nt even opiates, crack or meth come close...my friend went from 1 day at the casino to 3 months later going every minute he could to the casino and over $30,000 in debt. I also never saw such denial of an addiction
