Wink Newbie Advise Please

Hello everyone, I have decided to post here because I have a problem with drinking, I have been drinking daily for several years now. I only drink well into the evening usually these days only have my first drink at 11:00 pm. I never ever touch a drop during the day and can even socialise without drinking. My problem is I tend to drink to help me to sleep. Two years ago I visited my GP who gave me a course of Diazepan for a month and over that month I kicked the habit and didn't touch a drop for a couple of months, but then thought I could just become a social drinker, it wasn't long before I was back to where I started. I feel it's becoming a bit of a problem again, I drink between 100ml - 200ml a night of whisky mixed with water (half &half ).

At the moment I feel that I really need to kick the habit again and with the support of my husband am going to attempt to slowly cut it out again by reducing the amount each evening.

The only side affects I seem to have are hot sweats during the night when I cut down, feel a bit anxious of side affects, I don't get the shakes or anything...may I ask if this is going to be safe method ? may I add again I never ever drink during the day, I wouldn't even thank you for one.

Progress:

Day 1. Wendsday 26th Feb: I cut right back to 100ml of whisky and to be quite honest had the night from hell. I couldn't sleep all night, drifted in and out of sleep. Had really bad hot sweats and felt terrible all day yesterday.

Day 2 Thursday 27th Feb: Again stuck to my chosen limit of 100ml, although I didn't sleep very well, I did sleep at times, but more importantly didn't have any hot sweats at all, thank goodness. Got up showered and feeling much better. Tonight will be my very last night of 100ml before I reduce again to 75ml...my goal is to kick the habit by the end of next week.

Last night day three Friday 28th Feb: Again stuck to my 100ml limit, had a reasonably good nights sleep, waking early hours but managed to get back to sleep. Thankfully still no hot sweats or any other problems. Woke feeling much better and able to get on with things. Tonight dropping to 75ml for three nights and continuing to drop until quit day.

My intention is to continue reducing until my quite date next Friday. Thank you for listening.

Withdrawal can be fatal sometimes, you should check in with a doctor to make sure that what you're doing is safe.

We can't give advise on withdrawal/tapering or medical advise.Only your doctor can tell you what is safe

Just because you don't drink during the day doesn't mean your drinking is safe and youwon't have withdrawal issues. Also, what works for one person once may not work again-each withdrawal may be competely different.

Thanks if I have any real problems I will return to see the doctor, I appear to be fine at the moment, a little heady due to the fact haven't had my dinner yet. I have some valium left over from last time should I experience any difficulties until I seek medical attention, I think cutting down gradually will be OK for me. I have read numerous articles on alcoholism and I know it can be quite dangerous. I don't have any shakes, hot sweats and not feeling anxious at the moment. I thought I would come in here for some support for when I do quit totally.

I hope you stick around Grandma. This is a great place for strength and support when leading up to and quitting drinking. I would recommend you join the March class for everyone quitting in March.

Welcome to SR.

Seek medical advice about withdrawing, dangerous to do alone.Things can happen without any warning at all.

Hi, I am detoxing at home. Be careful. I am a little older then you, I'm 65. I think it is a bigger risk for us to detox at home. I'm taking the chance but I spoke to my doctor and the hospital for advise first. drink alot of water.
Good luck
Diana

Thanks Diana, good luck with your detox, how much were you drinking ? I did it two years ago under the doctor, I still have some diazepam left should I require them, I haven't stopped drinking yet but am cutting it down in controlled doses over maybe two weeks, so far so good, I haven't got any shakes or anything, the first night I reduced I had really bad hot sweats during the night but since have been fine. It's nice to speak to someone of similar age

I was drinking about 10 one ounce shots of whisky per day. Sometimes more. The worst part is that I was drinking all day. Going to the bar around the corner by myself. I am having a very hard day. The nurse at the hospital said if it got to ruff to just have a couple of drinks so I wouldn't go into total detox. But I'm afraid if I do that I will want more tomorrow.
Stay in touch. I like the fact that we are close in age also. Do you have grand children? I don't know where Yorkshire is?

Oh heck, I never ever touch a drop during the day, my problem as been sleeping, silly old me thought it would help to make me sleep, little did I know how much of a problem it's become, one drink and then more and more, as you know it quickly becomes a huge problem. Are you taking any medication ?? I was on diazepam a couple of years ago which helped, just 5mg a day which is neither here nor there, but helps with withdrawal. Not taking it this time.

I do hope things start to get better for you, just take small steps at a time, each small step counts, I have gone from around 200-400 ml a night to 100ml, I will stick with the 100ml for a night or two more and then drop a little bit there on in. Any strange unwanted symptoms and I have a diazepam at hand.

I have Grandchildren and Great Grandchild
