Detox

Does anyone know of any herbs that help with the detox process? Any particular foods that help with this? I'm having trouble sleeping as well...can anyone provide me with a plan that worked for them?

Thanks,
TJ

TJ, I know sugar helps with cravings, not sure about the rest though. Have you tried an on-line search to see what you can find out?

Milk thistle is a herbal supplement and, I've heard, natural/homeopathic remedy for treating hepatitis. Green tea is also filled with antioxidants. I take both in pill, form along with a multivitamin, and drink green tea too. I have read that anything with antioxidants and vitamin C will definitely help with detox. Foods that are also deemed good for detoxing include kale (& leafy greens), grapefruit, brussel sprouts, garlic, beets, and lemons.

vitamin B supplements. I know when I detoxed in hospital they gave me a huge shot in the rear of thiamine (B1). Alcoholics severely deplete the body's levels of it.

I recommend anyone thinking about taking supplements sees their Dr TJ.
What has worked for others may not work or even be suitable for you.

Some herbal things can interact with other meds for example.

All I did was take a multi vitamin, ate well, and kept hydrated. I think detox takes what it takes - our bodies do a good job without help IMO.

Kudzu helped me with my urges when I was 'trying' to quit. When I actually did quit a trip to GP and pharmacy for harder stuff like valium etc did the trick...

Instead of focusing on detoxing my body, a better approach for me has been using nutrition to support my body as it heals itself. My doc was pretty firm that fruits and vegetables were the very best source of vitamins and minerals. I *try* to get at least five different servings a day, supplemented with healthy fats and lean protein. Processed foods and sugar both seem to trigger cravings for me, so I try to avoid them. And, as Dee has already mentioned, staying hydrated just seems to make everything better.

Best of luck, TJ!

Great post TJ87. I asked this exact same question in the chat last night! I am on day 2 myself right now. I think the best thing is to eat a healthy diet and lots of WATER! I also take a multivitamin daily. I have heard lemon is good and herbal teas as well. Good Luck and great job so far!

In addition to a healthy nutritious regular diet, I also strongly recommend exercise. Helps me with cravings, mood swings, and I believe also with sleep. I never worked out regularly before getting into recovery and am loving it now. Also, now that I am sober I'm discovering more and more that anxiety is my main emotional issue, has always been already in childhood, so now I am very determined to develop a regime to manage it well and exercise is one of the best components. I also like meditation.
