Chairing a meeting
Chairing a meeting
I am chairing a meeting soon and feeling very nervous. I am just shy of 9 months sobriety and have probably spoken about 10 times total at meetings. I'm not really sure what to say! Any pointers? Advice? What did you share the first time you chaired a meeting? Thanks!
joy, just be yourself, we're all at the meetings for the same reason, support! My dad made sure that all of us were confident public speakers, his best piece of advice to us was "Don't worry, if you're nervous or make a mistake, you're the only one that will care"
Joy.. You will be fine. Someone told me once most alcoholics are too wrapped up in themselves and worried about their own recovery to be worried about someone else! Oh and don't forget there's the old trick of imagining everyone in their underwear! that always works for me LOL
I told her I was chairing and her reply was, "good deal". Lol.
She wants me to share more..I am fearful of public speaking. I care too much about what others think of me and want to be successful. I'm worried I'll be all over the place, not make sense or send a good message..

I was reminded that very few of us are trained speakers. It always surprises me that so many actors and performers have stage fright for years. Over the years I would plan a talk, and it ended up totally different. It's often said there is the talk we give, the talk we wondered why we gave and the talk we think we should have given. It depends on the area your in and it's customs but on several occasions I qualify by saying I'm an alcoholic and worked for this seat, any suggestions for a topic?
BE WELL
BE WELL
pray on it.
heres my experience:
asked about a week ahead if I could chair a Saturday night meeting. scared the crap outta me, but I said yes. all worked up all week about it. theres usually 30 people at that meeting!! that night came and 3 people showed up.
I don't remember what I said, but I didn't drink and that's all that mattered.
