OT? - stand up comics on alcoholism

I've been reading about abuse and reflecting on lots of things. One of the things I didn't expect to find is that when things get really bad, you may find yourself immersing in certain distractions. For me, I started looking at music equipment catalogs dreaming about being creative again, watching family-oriented TV i'd never normally watch because it showed the stable family structure I dreamed of having with my ex, and started watching stand up comedy, especially that which dealt with alcoholism. In the vein of 'some of it makes me laugh and some of it makes me cry.'

I thought I'd share two videos that helped my heart. I hope the links work.

Robin Williams - Robin Williams on Alcoholics - YouTube

Mitch Hedberg - Mitch Hedberg - Stand Up Comedy Full Show 15+ - YouTube

(the last one has the general mainstream response to clap if someone talks about drinking, which I have never understood)

Margaret Cho--"I'm the One That I Want". She is so hilarious. She not only talks about her alcoholism but also her eating disorder. The stuff on her parents is so funny.

If I'm not mistaken Mitch H died from a heroin OD, or something.

My favorite was Chris Farley the way he died was heartbreaking.

I think you're right. I found out years after the fact, always hoping for his next CD or DVD and finally searching to see if he was on tour. What a gentle, unique comedic genius he was.

John Mulvaney is my current favorite sober comedian. Hilarious guy! Here is his bit on why he quit drinking.

There is a channel on YouTube dedicated to recovery comedy: https://www.youtube.com/user/RecoveryComedy.

What about this classic Bill Cosby routine:

Bill Cosby Drinking - YouTube

It's funny/not funny...he manages to perfectly capture the different mannerisms depending on what TYPE of alcohol people consume. I watched this recently and felt very nostalgic for the days when this type of comedy didn't break my heart (as well as make me laugh).

I had not seen this one Spiderqueen. That's where I'm coming from too...need to laugh, but also nostalgic for the days when I didn't really understand and it didn't break my heart.

I adore this thread!!!!!!!! I can't watch these all here at work today, but I can't wait to check them out later.

George Carlin was always one my absolute faves, and while kinda crude, this quote always made me laugh:

“I think the warning labels on alcoholic beverages are too bland. They should be more vivid. Here is one I would suggest: "Alcohol will turn you into the same a--hole your father was.”

Thanks for posting this. I adore Mitch Hedburg. When he was first starting out I used to go see him live. He had a guest role on That 70's Show for a while.

I'll have to watch the clips after work.

That's so awesome! Wish I saw him. The first joke of his I ever heard was the one about the donut receipt. I was his fan ever since.

Chris Hardwick used to do a lot of standup, but now he's on The Nerdist podcast. Recovery is a frequent theme on his podcast. Also Marc Maron's podcast.

I just saw Chris Hardwick do stand up last month! Matt Mira opened for him. He was terrific, especially considering how recently he'd lost his dad.

I remember it like it was yesterday. He's been drinking coffee in the basement for the last four hours. David Spade and Christina Applegate can hardly keep it together.

Fat guy in a little coat!
