3 days with a migraine, doc prescribed me a barbiturate combo. What is your take?

At an AA meeting recently someone mentioned how they are completely against any mind altering pain meds what-so-ever. I have never abused pills, it has never even crossed my mind actually. I have a history of migraines and my previous prescribed migraine med stopped working so my doc prescribed another med with a barbiturate in it. I personally do not see this as ruining my sobriety, but I am curious as to what some of you think.

Depends how you use it. I have been lying on the floor, sick to my stomach, rocking and moaning with migraines before, and I could not have cared any less at all what the heck someone who never gets em has to say about how I treat it.

On the other hand, the better the painkiller, the more addiction potential it has. I have some experience with fiorinal taken for migraines, and it works very well, they can become tempting. And habit forming.

So, if you are using the painkiller as your Dr prescribes, and you need the relief (really), I'd say carry on. When your headache lifts, think very carefully about what you want to do with any remaining medication.

Even if I participated in AA, I couldn't answer that for you. What do YOU think? I think the issue isn't that you'd get addicted to them instead so much as you'd get into the habit of using something as a "crutch" again.

Well, I hadn't been posting here much in the last few days because even the light from the screen hurts mY head, I've been naunauseous, not eating, not functioning. I can now keep my eyes open and most of the migraine is gone. I'm pretty happy with my decision to take them.

It doesn't affect your sobriety at all. It's just you following medical advice.

For example, if I had to have an operation and part of it was administering some alcohol (I know they don't, it's just hypothetical), I'd be fine with it. If afterwards it lead me to abuse alcohol, which I can't imagine, I'd have a problem to seek help for.

But these medical things, they're justified. I use mouthwash with alcohol and sometimes swallow a little bit. Would that affect my sobriety at all? Nope.

However, and this is important. If you have these doubts, tell your doc. Maybe they have alternatives. Maybe they have a follow-up type of thing. Do address it.
