first post, first day

Hopefully I am even doing this right! I am new to this site.

I've gotten hooked on a drug and am now in the process of gradually tapering off. Because I used it to mask symptoms of depression, the depression is coming back again full force. I am having trouble concentrating on my work - truthfully, I have gotten almost nothing done all day and am tempted to throw in the towel.

I really hope I can do this. I hate to think that self-medicating with addictive drugs is the only way I can be happy. I have tried OTC meds for depression, but they don't really help.

Anyway - I could use some prayers! Thanks for listening - God Bless.

Hi and welcome!
You don't mention the type of drug; they can all be bad.
I was addicted to benzos for a few decades and used them, in the main for depression.
Of course they are downers,so I was barking up the wrong tree.
Glad to be right off them ,after lots of major withdrawal symptoms.

The right anti depressant might help you, along with some counselling.

Hi Bubovski - Are we allowed to name drugs on the board? It's kratom (legal opiate) - makes me feel better for a little while, then MUCH worse after it wears off! I take prescription pain meds too if I can get them, which isn't often.

I am on Lexapro for depression right now, but it hasn't done much. Maybe you are right - I should make an appointment with my doc to talk about trying something new. People say long distance running makes the nice brain chemicals flow....but I might be too lazy for that....

Thanks for writing back!

Definitely make an appointment with your dr and tell him/her that the Lexapro is not working too well. I take antidepressants and have for many years. For me, they level the playing field, no more, no less. But, antidepressants affect people differently and sometimes it takes a number of tries to find the right one and the right dosage.

Early, to SR. Support here is a big reason why I am doing so well staying of the chemicals. I've suffered through 3 annoying bouts of depression in my 3 years 6 months of sobriety. I'm paying closer attention to my diet because depression is a chemical imbalance of neurotransmitters, endorphins, and such that are necessary for proper mental functioning. Please see your doctor and have it checked out. Rootin for ya.

Welcome to SR! There is a section more specific about substance abuse if it can help. Newcomer section is an awesome place to be!

Yes. You can name substances here. Primary rule I know is not to give medical advice.
