Chris Herren

I went to see Chris Herren speak at a local high school about his addiction - it was very powerful. He threw away an NBA career and badly hurt his family and damaged his health.

The most powerful thing he said was that when he started, he was just drinking and smoking pot and when he was forced to go see a recovering addict speak his thought was "this guy is a degenerate loser, i am not like this guy"

I am done telling myself i am not like a real alcholic ... i might not have destroyed my life yet, but to deny that i am on a bad, bad path is no longer something i can believe

This board is really helping me so far to let all this out and i know that i am powerless over alcohol and that being less than honest about it to myself or others is a trap or temptation that the disease uses to help us keep drinking

geez i hope i don't lose the clarity i have right now and keep this going!

I'm so glad for this forum too. I'm grateful it's here all the time. Makes me feel less alone.

Keep sobriety as your first priority.

Have you seen the ESPN documentary about him? They showed it to us when I was in rehab. Powerful stuff.
