10 days sober
Hi All, I have not had a drink since the new year! It's been really up and down and for the first time in years i've gone without for this amount of time. I'm determined to quit for good but it hasn't been easy. If there are any little tips to get though the day to day grind it would greatly appreciated. Alex from London UK.....
Welcome to SR! I found I had to change my routine a bit to something that didn't remind me of drinking. I had to believe it in my soul that I was quitting for good. I had to change my thought patterns and how I handled my feelings.
It's hard at first but it does get easier. Stick with it cause living sober is its own reward.

yes, i've started running and trying to get heathy. tomorrow is key. Friday after work i always was off straight to the Iranian off license to buy beer and wine to keep me going through to the weekend.....Im sure they've been wondering where have i been over the past 10 days! I will go to the gym instead
Good for you! I'm on day 9... and counting.
○Drink water.....lots and lots. Everyone always said that and I dismissed it the previous times I've been around trying to quit. But since I started this time, I have made sure to drink water all day while I am at work and get at least 8 cups a day in on the weekends if not more. I think it is helping my poor little dehydrated brain.
○Go back to something that you really enjoyed before and then didn't do because it was either not fun or you were incapable of it when you were drinking. Mine is reading before I go to sleep at night. I look forward to it every day. I found out how to download books from the library onto my Kindle. I'm starting the fourth book of the year this evening.
Best wishes!
Oh and join one of the group threads here at SR. I find it helpful to be part of something that I have to check in on at least once a day. I'm in the Class of January 2014 and The 24 Hour Club You are welcome to stop by either of those --- very, very friendly folks at both places.

Congratulations on the 10 days, I find an attitude of gratitude helps me.... I am so grateful to be sober, I love AA and SR both instrumental in getting and keeping me sober one day at a time. Keep up the good work

Hi, avillalux, welcome to SR! You've found a great place; SR was a huge help to me.
Congrats on 10 days! I think in a sense you've already done the hardest part of all. There were ups and downs for me for a few months, it's a huge adjustment after all. But those first few days were the toughest. And wow, just making the decision to quit is the biggest decision of all. So it looks to me like you're already kicking butt!
I don't know if this qualifies as advice, but there was a concept that helped me a lot. Instead of looking at quitting as a sacrifice, instead of it being about giving something up, I started to think in terms of getting things back. Freedom, self-respect, pain-free mornings... A whole lotta good stuff awaits you, avillalux!

Hi Alex,
Spud here from Australia, I am too on day 10, just like yourself. It has also been a longtime being this sober, I'm also giving up the smokes but all is going well. Hang in there Mate, In regards to ideas maybe a few AA groups, walks and I like green tea it helps.
Take care catch up soon.
