'Under The Influence'
'Under The Influence'
I bought a copy of 'Under The Influence' yesterday and am fascinated by what I've read so far! One thing that's always puzzled me is how disoriented and confused AH is if I wake him during the night. He has sleep apnea and almost always stumbles into bed and forgets to put on his CPAP machine. If I finally succeed in waking him, he's always so confused and will carry on about nonsense (no idea where he is, who I am, etc). This can go on for half an hour without him ever 'snapping out of it'. I could never understand why he seemed more drunk hours after passing out than he had while still awake. Now I know!!! According to this wonderful little book, it's because his now alcohol-dependent brain cells are actually misfiring as his BAL lowers. His brain is so accustomed to the alcohol that all hell breaks loose when he stops drinking (i.e. passes out). I had no idea delirium was an actual withdrawal symptom, nor did I know it could kick in within hours of taking away the alcohol. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend it, it's fascinating!
It's available on amazon and in most bookstores in the US. Here's the amazon link for reference... Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism:Amazon:Books

This book was written in the 70s but still very highly regarded scientifically. They also have a follow up book written about 2004 I think "Beyond the Influence". Once of the same Drs who co-authored the first one also co-authored this one. (The other Co-author has since passed away).
Both books are great. Both are available on kindle as well.

This book helped me understand so much. I had the same deal, my AH would pass out on the sofa and stumble back to life at 3am and head to bed, but he would be so disoriented that he sometimes didn't seem to really know where he was, or even recognize me. Very sad.
As a side note, I gave this to my AH and he read it. This book was the only thing that seemed to catch his attention.
