Codeine withdrawal
Hello,
I am day 4 of withdrawing from Codeine.
I have been taking it daily for 3 years. About 100-150mg a day.
It started to treat bad tension headaches and migraines, and I ended up taking it because I HAD to.
New year and I didn't want to be a slave to the white pills anymore,
I have come clean with my husband (hardest thing I've ever done)
I am day 4 out and feeling really crap.
My whole body is aching and I have zero energy.
How long will this go on for?
My husband works away and I have 2 kids.
I am doing it only my own, but I really decided enough was enough and had to jump in head 1st.
Any help to get me through would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to SR and thank you for posting. Hang in there. By the time I had gotten to day 5 the worst of my withdrawals were over. I used every opiate/opioid I could get my hands on for about a year. The energy drain lasted for a while longer as did the issue with my digestive tract (as an addict you know what I'm talking about). The restless legs also hung around for a while as well. In my case withdrawal made me *so* sick that I never went back to using again. However I still hear the "call" from time to time where my brain remembers only the pleasant facets of using.
This is simply what happened to me so your mileage may vary.
Hang in there, be well, and keep posting.

I'm glad you found us. I have no experience with codeine but someone in our substance abuse forum might. Give it a look.

Hi and welcome Ronnirerese
I have no experience with opiate withdrawal but I'm glad you found us.
I hope you'll see your Dr too - the paracetamol or NSAIDS that codeine usually is combined with can be very hard on our bodies.
do consider getting a check up, just to be safe - you could ask about opiate withdrawal there too.

It can last awhile, especially the lingering stuff. It can be a HUGE help to have support to hang in there (because it WILL get better). Stick around here, maybe try some NA meetings where you are likely to meet people who have been through it, survived and THRIVED!
Remember, no matter how crappy withdrawal feels, if we don't pick up we NEVER have to go through it again.
early on, many people find a lot of baths, showers and drinking lots of fluids help. Also just remembering that it will only feel crappy for awhile, then freedom.
Having a recovery plan, so we can relearn facing life sans drugs helps keep us clean those first months when life feels SO awkward.

5,6,7 days and the worst is over. You will start to feel better soon.
If you go back on it you will just have to go through all the same pain again.
Keep at it! You are doing great. You'll look back soon and be SO glad you stuck at it!
Well done for getting so far!!

Hi guys,
Thanks for your reply. I am in the middle of day 5
Yesterday was horrendous - I even thought about gojng to a rehab/detox facility to help, anything to stop the pain
I ended up seeking the Help of a drug counsellor who says to take some tramadol for 1 week to help with withdrawal symptoms
Was a little unsure cause I don't want to have another drug to get off, but it's really helping me survive. I have 2 kids so can't go to bed and be sick. Need to still b mummy
I have a doc appt tomorrow. With my old doc (not the one who prescribed the pills) I feel ok opening up to him.
I am dealing with all the emotions of shame
At the moment. Wondering how the hell
I got here......
Thanks for your support

Hang in Ronnie, you are doing great, another few days and the worst are over.
5 days is a great investment for a future drug free and you have got this....
The residual withdrawals will hang around for a bit, so be prepared for them...
stay in touch with your councillor, they know stuff and you are not physically alone. .
