Recently relapsed

My name is Matt. I recently relapsed after a year of sobriety, before that relapse, it was 7 years of sobriety. After this last relapse, I read a post about a book titled "Under the Influence",,,, it grabbed my interest. Alcoholism had never been medically explained to me before,,, thus it was always something I felt I could overcome, or worse yet, learn to control again. This book has set me straight on the true medical reasons why I can no longer drink. I want to thank this site for its existence and assistance. I hope to find support, make new friends, and share with members of this site. Thanks, Matt

Welcome to SR!

You had some good sober time before. You therefore have most of the tools to repeat your success. And now you have extra knowledge to help you sustain sobriety for life.

Glad you found us! You will add to our non-perfect perfection. Sorry Star trek fan. ;-)

Welcome Matt! I just finished the book yesterday - very insightful and helpful! I also suggest "The Chemical Carousel - What Science Tells Us About Addiction" to further your understanding. I'm five months sober and am finding it empowering to educate myself about this disease.

hi Matt. I too found this book extremely helpful. It was written in 1981, and I was quite surprised I had never heard of it. I paid 1 penny, plush shipping on Amazon.

Welcome! I read that book as well and it was extremely interesting and helpful. I find that the more I understand this disease, the better I can take care of myself.

Thanks for the book tip, Matt... sounds like it's a good one. I'm going to look into it.

I have a couple relapses "under my belt" and nowhere near the sober time you've had.... I wonder; what brought about your relapse(s)?

After seven years and then a year - what happened?

Just asking because I hope your experience can help me on my new sober path....
