I am the wife of an alcoholic
This is who I am now. At some point my life changed without my consent and without my knowledge.
I let my husband change me, control me and manipulate me. He abused me, isolated me and discredited me. I tried to save him. And in turn I was hoping that if I could only save him, maybe he would save me too. But he can only save himself, and likewise, I am the only person equipped to save me.
Now I know better. Now I am informed, aware and better equipped.
Today is day one of rescuing myself.
I am going to focus only on myself and my children and making sure that our needs are met and that we enjoy every single day because that is up to me and no one else.

BRAVO!!! This is the best post I have read in quite some time. You are aware and actively prepared to detatch and move on with YOUR life for you and your children.
Good Luck and Many Blessings to you and your children!

I really like your Mark Twain quote.
I'm sorry you've found yourself in a situation that has been so miserable and I admire the words you used above.
From another conversation, stung, your words above are exactly what I articulated poorly when I have stated that we all have choices when it comes to what we can control. We may not be strong enough or ready enough or aware enough to make them at certain points in our lives but the greatest source of hope a human being can have, in my opinion, is the realization that we are not powerless to alter our future.
Simple and easy are so very different. How often do we harm ourselves through decisions, actions or inaction that are obviously self-destructive (I sure do) when the path to a better tomorrow is blessedly simple yet cursedly hard and terrifying?
I hope you will hear my intent if I get the words wrong. It makes me say "YES!!!!!" when I read a post like yours above because I read "There's someone who is on the way to a happier tomorrow and a better future for her children". To say "I am proud of you" can be misinterpreted as condescension. Perhaps "I admire your courage in the face of adversity" is harder to take the wrong way.
...and that Twain quote is priceless.
