Christmas Shocker

Hi, everyone,

I’m hesitant to post this on Christmas morning, but feel the need to release this news. It’s weighing heavily on me. I have a friend who is an attorney and an alcoholic. We are not all that close – we met last winter when we were working on a project together. The project concluded, and we have kept in touch, sending “how are things going” texts every month or so. He struggles mightily with his addiction – JUST can’t stay in recovery, although he keeps trying. He’s been fighting this battle since he was 17, and turned 47 this year. When I met him, he was living in a sober living house, but a few months ago, he told me that he was doing really well, working a good program, and had just moved into a home in a nearby suburb. He was spending time with his children; things seemed to be looking up. We agreed to get together for lunch at some point, but that never happened.

Last night, I sent him a “Merry Christmas” text message. I received a response this morning from one of his friends, who informed me that my friend had been killed in a two-car crash in November. I had just spoken to him five days before. He ran his car into the rear end of another, then careened into a tree. Alcohol was involved. I am shocked. And sad. Another life lost to this disease.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Thanks for sharing this . . . it's such sad news, but a very important reminder to us all, especially at Xmas to keep our eye on the ball!! . . . Alcohol is serious business!

Thoughts/prayers are with his friends and family!!

I'm sorry for your friends death
if we don't stay sober this disease can take one so very fast
many of my friends who I met in sobriety who went back out died drunk
I don't think they would have thought that
booze may kill me this time
cunning, baffling and powerful and sometime also deadly

blessings sent out to you on this Christmas day

What a sad story. This reminds all of us to work our program and take it one day at a time!
