That was a tough one.
My Dad's 80 so not sure every Christmas if he'll see another one. He's also a Scot, so drinking is second nature and God knows how, but he never tipped over the edge into alcoholism.
Anyhow, just got the coach over to his town (about 30 miles) and as usual, we had lunch, swapped pressies etc (he's going to Spain for Xmas). Then out of the blue he said ' How about a Christmas drink' ? Eeeeeeeeek. He hasn't a clue that I have a problem thankfully, as he'd worry (his sister died from alcoholism), so I said ' Oh i'd love to, but I have to get back to Nottingham' I compromised and went with him while he had ONE drink and I sat with a cola. Was hard, as probably, though hopefully not, the last Xmas drink i'll have with him. All's well though now and am home safely and sober

Congrats on not taking the first drink
I found it easier to be honest with the people around me that I love and trust. When they know what the deal is it just makes life so much easier

I hear what you're saying, but we only meet up every two months or so, so it would worry him, not seeing what I was doing, if you get me

Thanks SO much. I really hope you're right about more christmasses. He keeps saying things like 'I didn't expect to see 80' and I joke 'Dad you were a military cop, there's no getting rid of those' Xx

[QUOTE=KateL;4352113]Good to hear. Your dad sounds like a character [/QUOTEW
He's a SOD mate
He gets bus into town as he can't drive anymore, due to his peripheral vision going. He then speeds in the damned thing to wind me up (in a funny way), but he excelled himself today going around the shopping centre - some people were standing chatting and rather than go around them, he used the bliidy horn!! I said DAAAAAAAAAD and he winked and me and burst out laughing I could have died on the spot I was so embarrassed Xx

Thanks Twinings, thanks headlump. I don't see him that often - not by choice, long story but he sold his (our) house and moved in with his partner (she saw him coming). Me and her don't get on (again, not by choice) so Dad and I meet in town Love him to bits. My mum's been gone 21 years from cancer and we nursed her to the end at home, so we have a special bond Xx

Thanks Dee - I'm seeing a whole new side to him. Gone is the bossy cop version - he was almost in tears talking about how my Mum would arrive home laden with things for Christmas. All these years I had thought he had just 'moved on' to his current partner, but all the time he was hiding his pain.
Love him SOOOOOOO freakin much
