Yellow death

I work in security.

Last year i worked with double diagnosed patients.
Double diagnosed means someone has an addiction (booze, drugs) and serieus mental illnes often caused.by the substance abuse. Or vica versa, they were abusing substances to self medicate.

One of the patients, an alcoholic , turned yellow one day.
His liver failed.
I never thought a man could really change skin-colour like he did.
He was truely yellow.

He never wanted help ( only a roof, food and little money).
After a while he decided he wanted help after all.
He couldn't continue the fight, he said to me.
He was tired.
The social/ health workers hospitalized him.

A week later he died..

Just wanted to share, for i think about him sometimes. He was a nice man.

Thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder that our choices in this disease can be life or death. It's difficult to see people go through the slow death that alcoholism causes. I feel for my family and friends that watched me go through the pain for so long.

Today I learned of the death of a man that I didn't know well. He was a part of a community centered around another hobby of mine. At any rate he was a clean, sober religious guy in his mid-late 40's, an ex-military guy. He died of a rare form of cancer.

This just now reminds me of a thread here a ways back where the hypothetical question is asked, what if you had a fatal disease but the cure was 100% effective, instant and totally free- would you take it? Of course you would! Who would be crazy enough to turn it down?

You all know the answer- an alcoholic would turn it down. Thousands, maybe millions, of them do. I think of the guy with cancer and what he would have been willing to do just to hang out another month to have another Christmas with his wife and family. And then I think of all the alcoholics that have the cure in front of them and can't or won't take it.

A very good post, coming_clean. Thank you.

I was just reading about Megadeth's bass
player and their band going thru dark days
of sex, drugs and rock n'roll to eventually
come out on the other side clean and sober
and being drawn to the church.

It's in reading ur story and theirs that
inspire me to remain sober each day.

Thanks.

The benefit of being in the recovery community is we are continually experiencing very positive and very negative reinforcement.

We see people who have conquered their addiction and have built a very positive and wonderful life.

We also see the dark side with the death and destruction. The place I will be if I ever let my guard down.

Each path is a series of choices. Today I choose the path of sobriety and happiness while praying for those that are still suffering
