Hello, I am a 20 year, beer only alcoholic who wants to quit drinking. I am very isolated as I do not drive (never reinstated my revoked driver's license) and the shame and guilt I feel being an active alcoholic.
I'm not even sure I can stop drinking, although I did for 3 years through a lot of exercise and joining racquetball clubs. I have alienated all of my friends but I so don't want to die an alcoholic.
I love reading posts from other people. It encourages me. I go to church but then feel "unworthy" to be there. I feel a hypocrite. The same in AA. How can I attend when I'm drinking?
Any words of encouragement are truly appreciated!

Hi.
"The same in AA. How can I attend when I'm drinking?"
The support I got when in that circumstance was each time hearing the words "KEEP COMING, IT WORKS IF WE WORK IT."
After too many non sober meetings for me it clicked and the path to sobriety opened for me.
BE WELL

Welcome to SR.
The only requirement for attendance at an AA meeting is a desire to stop drinking. If you want to stop, you 're by-definition worthy.
You wrote that you weren't sure if you could stop drinking. What are you willing to do to find out?
Tons of great information on this forum. Read around the different sections and get knowledgeable.
Best of luck on your journey!

In my opinion, both for church and AA, the fact that you are there, trying to improve yourself and your life makes you worthy. Everyone should be going there for that reason, not so brag about how well we are doing.
8 months ago I would never have believed that I could stop drinking, I still have no idea how I gathered the strength and hope to even try. I am sure you can too, with the right support and circumstances.
Would reinstating / repeating your drivers' licence help you?

thank you all for your supportive comments. I read and re-read them.
Broken promises has been on my mind. It's like when I quit drinking then I am forced to face the destruction my drinking has caused.
However, I will go to AA and read this message board and ask for forgiveness.
